I have Slackware8 on PIII and had no problems. There is plenty of
information in the INSTALL file regarding libraries etc that you
might be missing, and lists some problems and solutions. Do you
have permission to write in the directory you specified for the
install (su - root)?.

Hi all,
Most modern technical books have two tables of contents -- one that lists the
chapters, and one that goes down a couple more levels.
I tried this with LyX, using but the second table of contents comes out
blank. Any ideas?
Thanks

Hello:
Thanks to Matej, Thomas, and Herbert and others for answering my questions.
However, I am still struggling with some of my original problems. Any other
suggestions or remarks?
Concerning my second question: I would like to get rid of the default
justification for text in a table column.
Sorry for the post just a few minutes ago... it was herm... internal ;-)
And yes you just found out I use Lyx...

Using Slackware Linux 8.0 on a Pentium III PC I've just commanded:
$ tar xvfz lyx-1.1.6fix3.tar.gz
$ ./configure --prefix=/usr/local/lyx-1.1.6fix3
$ make
$ make install
and seen the error messages:

Josko Plazonic recently had the same problems, and found out they are
related to the way LyX chooses which fonts to use. Read

I am looking for a precompiled (and static linked) binary of LyX 1.1.6fix3
for Dec (Compaq) Tru64 Unix version 4.0 and/or 5.1. If anyone has these
binaries posted please let me know. Thanks much.

Hi,
it is said in Herbert's Float Tips page that it is
possible to control individual placement of floats if
you write in the float "as the very first line in
TeX"
the control parameters for example [htb].
It is not working for me, the "[htb]" is not
understood by TeX and is shown as text in the
I have the same problem and unchecking Use scalable fonts in
Preferences->Screen Fonts made it go away, but I don't know what the
"correct" solution is.

If I use
\caption[short caption]{long caption} with \,[]{} in red TEX mode
instead of Figure: long caption (i.e. caption-environment)
in book-style, I get the following problem:
the 9 figures in Chapter 1 are in the LOF 1.1 to 1.9, ok
the figures themself are correctly shown with 1.1 to 1.9, ok
After replacing RedHat 7.1 to RedHat 7.2 on my laptop (to solve
hardware issues), I discovered that the lyx math editor started to
behave strangely. I am using lyx-1.1.6fix3 from the binary rpm listed
below, which worked fine with RH7.1. The math-editor does not display
backslash-escaped character

I generally reduce their width to something less than 50% of the whole
page and two or more figures can nicely fit side by side. You can give
