My problem has finally been solved. I had to change the setting in LyX ->
Preferences -> Language Settings -> Spellchecker -> Spellchecker engine to
"Native," delete the text in the "Alternative language" field, reconfigure
LyX, and restart the program. I'm not convinced that I'm actually
