Sorry about my previous knee-jerk response. I was thinking Spitz meant
that the index entries should be scaled back to 40 characters, with the
option to see the whole thing in the tooltip.
I now realize that's probably not what he meant. Showing the full string
LyX isn't quite that sophisticated, the Outliner provides
something close--as long as the entries can be seen in full. (I don't
think a 255 character limit would cause any problems, though, and it
could probably even be less.)
