I'm not sure if its relevant but my working installation of
lyx136cvs-rel17 on win2k lost instant preview of equations
when the latest release of ghostscript gs8.51 was newly installed in
its default directory c:\program files\gs with prior versions removed.

Unfortunately I can confirm Uwe's report for release 9:
PDF reports : unrecoverable error : typecheck in .putdeviceprops
with a corresponding Adobe report : "There was an error opening this
document: This file cannot be found."
PDF(dvipdfm); PDF(pdflatex); Postscript all display as expected

Installation of 1.3.6 (Release 7) on a Win2000 system (without
administrator privileges) went smoothly:
Msys and Python24 were installed easily. Ghostscript, Image Magic,
MikTex etc were found correctly.
(For some unaccountable reason Msys grabbed and refuses to give up the
MatLab icon???)
