That was it. Installing mathml-fonts from fedora core 2 did the trick.

The following patch fixes backwards search in 1.4.0cvs. This is really
straightforward, the only important thing is that I changed the
semantics of BufferView::putSelectionAt.
Also, the patch gets rid of IsLetterCharOrDigit.
I'll apply it shortly if nobody complains.
