I all cases I haved seen hung image rendering
there was
either an old lyx tmp-dir (some times I had several of them)
or an old gs tmpfile (starts with gs)
or a hung gs process.
Is there no cure for this? Do you ever check whether rendering is done?

In write protected documents it is currently not possible to scroll the latex
preamble. I think this should be enabled.
