Although I'm not sure if it is usable in mathEd or not,
I have written a font/locale definition for TeX Math fonts.
Please evaluate and feel free to improve and/or criticize.

One of my personal wishlists for LyX is a better intuitive view of nesting
structure. I seem to frequently work in highly nested documents, and it's
not always immediately clear exactly what the 'change environment depth'
command is doing.
