when the battery is charged the charging stops (this stops the battery from
exploding!). When charging is turned off, the laptop will run on battery
power for a short while and once the battery is not 100% full (as you say

I am seeing a similar thing but I tired switching to a tty in virtualbox
through host f1 and was able to install pastebinit and with
dmesg|pastebinit http://paste.ubuntu.com/6531187 which says init was
killed and that lightdm exited with status 1.
