everything, changed a hundred times all the values in both the pppd mtu

1. are you sure u swtiched /vmlinuz with the new zImage\bzImage?
2. are you getting this error while running pppd?
3. if u use it as a module, are you sure its loaded?

i got this poweroff problem too, havent found a way to fix it yet.
about ur 'weird' messages at boot time,
do you use modules? if not, i suggest you rebuild your kernel without
modules support, it should take care of the annoying messages.

Those long hostnames you see on the IRC are actually simple vhosts
(virtual hosts) that people make, specially for use on the irc,
with bnc, u can choose to use a vhost for the machine
you are running the bnc from.
these are just addional ip's that point to the same machine.

in console, your mouse works? (are you using gpm?)
you can check if your mouse responds using `mev`.
if it does, sometimes the gpm server has problems interacting with X.
try killing it (gpm -k) or use the -R option in gpm.

Boot using your bootdisk, login as root and reinstall lilo,
you can do that by using the command 'lilo'
if you get an error, or if you feel you need reconfiguration,
i suggest using `liloconfig`, which is easy to use, or, do it manually.
