Use cdrdao (1.1.5), it uses cdparanoia to read the cd.
cdrdao read-cd --device 0,1,0 cd.toc
Reads cd and creates two files, data.bin and cd.toc.

I solved my immediate problem by installpkging the development tools
from slackware-8.0 over the original system (got OK from the vendor).
However, I am still curious about peace and co-existence of various
glibc's, so if anyone has any clue, do let me know.

What do you know, Ximian announced today the release of Connector, which
will allow you to connect to an Excahnge server using Evolution.
Which is good news for people with paranoid corporate sysadmins that
don't allow IMAP access to their Exchange servers (that would be me) :)
