I am using debian and with a mixed bag of sources.
I upgraded my system to stable (which was previously sarge and stable was
woody) but didn't change my sources.list.

I use Kopete for my messaging needs.
MSN, ICQ, Yahoo & Google Talk (jabber) all work nicely with no or
minimal configuration required.
GAIM is a good IM program too :)
