2) I would divide the configuration into 2 parts:
2.1. Have it recognized by the kernel.
2.2. Network configuration.
Does the kernel recognize the device? This is evident from the boot up
messages on the console as well as from /var/log/messages.

a US Robotics Sportster External modem.
The modem has been accepted by Red Hat
and successfully dials out on rp3-config in debug mode.

i'v set up a debian box to do it. it has 2 connections, one to isdn and
one to adsl.
if i use the isdn connection everything goes smoothly, but when i
