All the places I know that host Linux distributions hold them as files
for FTP download.
FTP trees are harder to download and CD's recorded by these aren't
bootable.
Are there any FTP sites that have these distros as CD images?

Right way: login as user (preferebly via ssh, not telnet), then su.
Wrong way: edit /etc/securetty and add ttyp1 there.
