Well...after downloading 2.8.0, tweaking the ebuild, and upgrading
my version of Ghostscript, all is well again. It's probably
Ghostscript's fault; my previous version was 7.07 and I upgraded to
8.15.

This sounds very weird, since note heads and rest symbols come from the
same font file. Regarding lilypond-book, I really hope you use the
--psfonts flag and corresponding
flag to dvips according to the documentation.
Anyway, why don't you use the LINUX package at www.lilypond.org -> Downloads?

Greetings, all. I hope this hasn't been answered already; I
searched the archives but turned up nothing.
I've been having two (possibly related) font issues with PDFs
generated by 2.7.40 that were not present in 2.7.36:
1) When
