Also, what happens if you try to run the dvips command for your
score directly from the command line?

To me it looks like you have some general problem with the teTeX
package, rather then a LilyPond specific problem.
Try to run the following commands:
latex sample2
This sounds very strange! First of all, I would recommend
you to upgrade to the latest stable version 2.2.x (see
instructions at www.lilypond.org on how to get a package
for Debian).
