I faced the same problem four or five years ago, and I ended up writing
a perl script that
converted the volume changes into velocities in the midi file. If
necessary, I can dig up and try
to find it in my archives...

Lilypond-book does a great job for me... but experience has shown that

opinion is of limited scope here.

Ok, but to me, it's not only a matter of entry. It is also
a matter of readab

Sometimes, I insert extra \relative clauses so that mistakes

nnels limit is not intrinsic to the file format, and more
channels
can be defined, even if some MIDI players might fail to read them.
Lilypond
does use these additional channels.

I still use a version 2.03, and it works really well. I'm a bit reluctant to
move to the latest version, as my source is crippled with m4 macros
up to a point where convert.ly cannot be used.
However, I now encountered an annoying problem. I understand that
it is unlikely to be correct
are the a's in b expanded when declaring b, or when actually using b ?
