Thank you to MM. Barry, Scott, & Bréfort for your answers. The main
issue was the ragged last bottom. Once I added that line to the \paper
block, the staff spacing problem was solved.

I am a new LilyPond user entering my first song. I have copied the file
below. By reading the Learning Manual, I have learned how to do
everything I need to do EXCEPT: I would like to increase the space
between the staves so that the music is fairly evenly spread vertically
across the one page,
