Looking at the difference between diffutils-2.9/3.0 compilation log, I find this grep re_compile_pattern ./* ./coreutils-8.5:checking for working re_compile_pattern... yes ./diffutils-2.9:checking for working re_compile_pattern... no ./diffutils-3.0:checking for working re_compile_pattern... yes .
