81JM has had cheap suitcase latches, like these but not as good, and a side
hinged canopy for thirty years. Never a problem except when I forgot to
latch. The canopy lifted a few inches at beginning of takeoff roll. I
aborted, latched the canopy, and resumed takeoff. Most remarkably, my

I should have mentioned that when I first got Jim Faughn's plane
(N891JF), the canopy was side hinged to the right, and the two suitcase
latches were installed front and rear on the pilot's side. It worked
fine. The only time I've had a problem with that one was the first time

For a KR that has survived South Africa, Australia, France and who knows how
many other homes, Rudi seems to know what he's talking about.
Mike!
P.S. No emergency latch picture today, sorry. Tomorrow!

Hi Larry.
No, the hinges did not fail, the failure was the latch, at the back,
releasing most likely due to a bit of flexing in the fuselage and/or canopy
as could be simulated on the ground.
What I meant with my comment was that once the canopy was open the air

Looking at the NTSB report, Photo 6 does look like the Right canopy hinge,
not the Left canopy hinge as labeled. Also appears the hinge ripped away
from the forward deck, not the fuselage; sequence is unknown regarding
canopy latch failure or hinge foundation failure.

Hi guys. I too like Larry built a gull wing door just for the safety aspect and I am sure glad I did. On my very first flight, it raised up about 1” and did not go any further. I had a latch system that simply did not work the way I had it. The lift from the gull wing showed me that at about 1000 f

All planes I have own and flown has this happen, the hatch, door, latch

I have often carried a bungee to hold it from unlatching.

My KR2 that had the canopy "issue" has a front hinged "pop up" canopy. The
latch was (changed now) a central knob between the seats that pushed 2
rods, one on each side, through holes in tabs that are attached to the
canopy. One of the things I disliked about it is that it was never easy to

thanks Mark,
So as I am reading it the rear of the canopy is the area being lifted in
flight so in my 3d imagination I am visualizing a strap affair above and
outside the bulk of the canopy structure, built into and not protruding,
terminating at the bottom on both sides with "live or die" qualit

So does anyone know are the failures with canopy latches becoming unlatched

Some mix of the above?
