on the exhaust subject, my picture of Ken Rand original shows short
stub pipes. Obviously these take up the least real estate, and get
more heat out of the cowl. assuming backpressure needs can be
addressed with baffles (?) whats the downside?

Sure looks great - is the silver finish the home brew ceramic coating (TurboX)?
I assume your talking about having just the final pipe chromed.
I had my exhaust on the Osprey ceramic coated by JetHot about 15 years ago. I
think the cost was ~$300. I has held up pretty well (peeled of

Looks good!
For plating it was common practice to use electroless nickle.
Personally, I would go with full ceramic coating both inside and out.
Probably cost a little more.
