Ah. It really is in how you ask the question. I didn't see a question
asking for a recommendation. Lots of guys jumped on my reply, apparently
thinking I was recommending polyester resin. I only answered that it

Thanks for the info Mark.
this all came about because I have an "ultralight" buddy who used in his
"legal Eagle" airplane he built. I didn't know for sure how it would really
stand up. around here all our car gas has 10% alcohol in it from Oct to
April for "smog" reasons (like it really helps) and

OK, a good friend of mine (Jim Davis) has a Cherokee 235, with the original
polyester tanks. He had an autogas STC, and unfortunately put in autogas that
had alcohol. It dissolved the material in the tanks. No Polyester is not
something anyone should put in an aircraft if there is any chance
Maybe the question should not be whether polyester is useable for a gasoline
tank, but which one works "best". Back when I researched fuel tank resins I
read that vinylester was practically designed to be resistant to gasoline
and it's additives, as well as other chemicals that were difficult t
Thanks to ALL.
But thanks also Scott. I have flown many a Cherokee and never knew their
wingtip tanks were Polyester. I simply asked because the Vinylester seems to
be very caustic stuff, I knew epoxy wouldn't work with alcohol and thought
polyester seemed to be a middle ground. plus my THOUGHT wa

Fred,
Polyester should work just fine. That's what Piper used to build the tip
tanks on the Cherokee 235 and Cherokee 6. Polyester has it's difficulties
in certain applications, but it works quite well for a fuel tank.

I thought it didn't do well with auto gas among some shrinkage issues
similar to what you see on old boats.

Don't know. Piper never intended for their planes to have alcohol in
them. That may very well be the reason why Steve Glover says not to use
it.

Can anyone tell me if Polyester will work on a fuel tank application? Or is
Vinylester the only medium for a fuel tank?
