Having found the source of my major oil leak it's really nice to be able
to fly for 4 or 5 hours and end up with only a trace of oil on the belly
given it's a Continental.

I've used developer from the Dye Penetrant Kit - same principle but you
don't have to mess around with the oil. Just spray around the suspect area
and any leak will show up.

Put some of the dye in the oil and run it for
just a few minutes at night then shut it down and the leak will light up
like a neon sign.

I had previously installed a Revmaster oil pump with a built in oil filter

generate several oil leaks with my installing this oil system. Leaks were
at the crank case sump seals for the side drain casting. Fixed that by

Guys,
I just finished giving the oil cooler a real pressure test with
hoses and gages. It only took about 10# of air pressure for the trouble
to show itself. There is a crack in the first plate on the inlet/ outlet
end but opposite side. Directly adjacent to the original mounting flange

For whats its worth the only other time I have seen a repeated oil leak that
stumped me and other techs prior to a total teardown was when a crank was
broken, but not broken into two pieces. Seems crazy but today's metalurgy is
alot better than before so it behaves in some strange ways. Occurr

Hello Netter's. Here's the final analysis and diagnosis.

It has been my experience that a crank leak is spawned by one of typically 2
problems:
1st the crank has too much clearance between it and the seal so that in a
very short time of run in the seal leaks.
2nd the thrust bearing has excessive play and allows the crankshaft to
"walk"
Another possibility is that there is an O ring seal is cut or missing from
the inside of the flywheel. I'm not sure which type of engine is involved,
but my type 4 has an O ring in the inner diameter of the flywheel.

He said "gasket", so I suspect he's not talking about the "flywheel seal"
(which is fit to all air-cooled VWs and rides on the outside of the crank),
or the "flywheel o-ring" (fitted to the latest) between the crank and
flywheel, but the thin steel and or paper gasket that fits between earlier

Well... I spoke with Steve at Great Plains and Dan Deihl. Nobody has ever
experienced the problem I am having. When the last repair was made, we did
coat the gasket with permatex, installed a new flywheel and gland nut from

The original complete engine kit was purchased, ready to assemble from GP.
All the necessary machine work had been completed...I should know more
tomorrow after splitting the case and having the crank magnafluxed (I hope).

Would this engine be "new" (at least to you) that you bought from somebody,

Mark,
You are right, it did belong to someone else initially. However, I have
known this guy for a number of years and he knows his stuff on building. It
never leaked while he had it and it was barely ran. He has sin
Hi Ray
I am flying the VW 1915.The oil leak I was referring to was at the push
rods. I had the double nut lock type after market rod covers but they
always required adjustment and leaked. I replaced them with spring
loaded ones that are a snap to install and do not leak a drop of oil,

Thanks. I have heard that the Corvair is also a "leaker". When I do my
rebuild I will see if they have spring loaded push rods/tubes.

Along w/the carb prob I'm having I also noticed that I developed

either between the nut and the stud or from underneath the washer. As

There are no "seals" for the case studs. I am assuming that you mean the
studs that hold the heads to the case.
However, the push rod tubes exit near the studs and it would be my guess
that the gaskets for those, and possibly the push tubes themselves, need to
be replaced. Certainly with an en
My engine manual clearly shows orings over the 6 case half studs prior
mating the 2 halfs together. The manual calls them case stud seals. The
only thing these could do is to keep oil from migrating out the studs.
