I love the drive from the mid-west. The northern route through Billings climbs through gorgeous mountains to Spokane, then down the Columbia Gorge, following the route of Lewis and Clark. Further south you can cross the Wallowa and Blue Mts. from Boise to Pendleton following the Oregon trail. So
