I love the drive from the mid-west. The northern route through Billings climbs 
through gorgeous mountains to Spokane, then down the Columbia Gorge, following 
the route of Lewis and Clark. Further south you can cross the Wallowa and Blue 
Mts. from Boise to Pendleton following the Oregon trail. South from that are 
the Strawberry Mts. and Mt. Jefferson into the Willamette valley. From Northern 
Nevada are Mt. Shasta and Crater Lake N.P. into Medford. All are lovely 
wilderness experiences, and all climb out of the dry desert into the fresh 
blues and greens of Oregon, just the way the pioneers did a century ago. Come
