Since I have moved to France, my Magellan GPS 315 does not want to
initialize. According to the manual, it should take about 10 minutes. Yet,
I can let it search for hours in a row, to no avail.

I had similar problems until I cleared the memory ( see p46 of manual ) and
then started over again. Check the time and date are correct also,
otherwise the units sometimes can't match the received data with what it
expects to find. Once a couple of satellites are tracked though for sa

When the GPS is trying to establish itself it needs to consider satellites
that may be below it's normal limit of elevation so it really is helpful to
ensure you place the unit in a wide open space. Afterwards it's not's so
critical as it will choose those which are higher.

Unfortunately I no longer have the 315 but have gone ( backwards ) to a
300. During the initialisation the receiver is collecting ephemeris data, a
bit like fine tuning itself to the satellite. But it's not the strength of
the signal itself that is important at this stage, it's more abo
