Another very nice advantage to buying a relatively inexpensive Experimental is, unlike rental or shared-use aircraft . . . you never have to wonder how the previous pilot treated the plane or just what they did.  Obviously it works . . . rentals and shared airplanes . . . .   I rented for years

Thanks for the info about the vinylester resin. Also, Mark, you previously wrote: "A quick analysis of prices may lead one to think that the O-200 is a better deal, and maybe so, but I have to say that I'd far prefer the Corvair's smooth six cylinders to the O-200's four cylinders, and having rebu

Smart airplane buyer!  He's got a plane that outperforms by a mile anything he could get that's factory built with an O-200 and a full panel.  Plus he can work on it himself and build ratings and time . . . there's just no end to the advantages of buying a well-built Experimental over something

The link to the Purdue article is addressing turbine engines, not normally aspirated piston engines. Water injection in turbine engines is intended to increase available thrust. It does so by increasing mass flow through the engine, reducing the turbine inlet temps thereby allowing additional fu

I've read about slowly trickling water down into the throat of a top-mounted carb on a running gasoline engine to decarbonize the piston tops and chambers, although I've never tried it myself. I suppose it's the rapid expansion of the liquid water to gaseous phase that blows off the crud. Osca

I'd like to clarify what I wrote yesterday about crankshafts.  That page is devoted to crankshaft failures, but doesn't emphasize enough that another key ingredient is the "fifth bearing".a much larger and longer bearing (twice the diameter and more than 2" longer than the factory's "fourth
