I had the good fortune to learn to fly at the Aero Club located at Holloman
AFB. My instructors were all high time USAF trained pilots with a priority
for following the rules and safety. All my training flights were made off
active military runways with a tower. You DO NOT screw up in this
environm
Depending on the runway llength and width, I would have just asked you if you
minded him passing on the other side of the runway with lots of cleaance, or it
his place was going to be well off the ground before it got to your position -
in any case the common courtesy of a call would have been
I think now would be a good time to upgrade to a newer design and ability
to repair for both sides

Sounds like a parking brake cable type end to me.
I'd try doing a search on Amazon for parking brake cables, you might be able
to find something there you can adapt.
