I had the good fortune to learn to fly at the Aero Club located at Holloman
AFB. My instructors were all high time USAF trained pilots with a priority
for following the rules and safety. All my training flights were made off
active military runways with a tower. You DO NOT screw up in this
environment without severe consequences. I wish every pilot had these
advantages.
I had the good fortune to join the CAP shortly after earning my PPL and had
the extreme advantage of "learning" how to fly correctly in all conditions,
something that I never could have experienced in the civilian world. All
the pilots I flew with in my early days were extremely conscientious about
proper procedure.
As I gained hours I have had the fortune to fly with many pilots. Some of
these flights were a true delight, but some were true terror. I went to
test fly a Zenith 701 at KLRU some years back. The owner was adamant about
the airplanes ability to not stall. He pulled it into a stall on take off
and it just mushed through it. Puckered my ass. We flew low and slow over
the Rio Grande but I was not comfortable with his flying and was glad when
the demo flight was over. I did not buy the airplane but he did stall it
doing the same dumb shit over his house about a week before Christmas that
year and killed himself before the admiring eyes of his wife and kids.
Should have never happened but this guy did not have or did not absorb
proper techniques.
I was dismayed that some pilots had the same dumb ass procedures as the
vehicle drivers around here, and they are horrible. A real eye opener. I
expected more of trained individuals. Then I realized we are not all
trained the same. I'm grateful for my training. If yours is not this
complete, you need to correct that.
Including proper radio procedure.
