Technically no, you don't need ram air. I've seen KRs set up both ways. The
majority seem to have it. Mine does. What I do know is that pulling the carb
heat will significantly enrich my mixture from when I am running ram air. In
the winter, my engine will stumble if it is too rich suc

One concern with not having a fresh ram air supply to the heat muff
but instead pulling air from under the engine is the possibility of
carbon monoxide if you have any kind of an exhaust leak.
