Corvair mounts use .049" thick 5/8" round and square 4130 steel tubing.

I've got some drawings of Lycoming mounts which seem to use combinations
anywhere from 1/2" .049, to 7/8" .058 wall tubing. Probably can use 1/2"
.049 for a VW on a KR and be safe. Bump it to 5/8" .049 if you want to add
in some safety factor.

To each his own, but I do not recommend it. Having built one with the side
tilt and one with a "gull wing", if I were to do it again, I would use the
forward tilt, for many reasons already given on this forum.
