Ok so not to beat a dead horse here but the products that you purchase in
any Big Box are NOT Varnish but are Urethane / plastic finishes. Ace
used to sell a true Oil based Varnish till last year and they have now
stopped. Thanks to the EPA and other folks Varnish is rapidly
disappearing.
I think the real question is varnish better than polyurethane or are they about
the same

Once you put varnish on your wood parts, it will be very difficult to get
anything to stick to it. Removing it is difficult and you must get it all
off, even out of the pores, to get a good bond. If you think there will
ever be a need to bond to that part, seal it with the same thing you use for
We used to cut resin with styrene. It would thin the resin so it would flow
nicely. A thin coat wouldn't add much weight.
