I'm sure others can say for sure, but it's always been my understanding that
compression numbers should be pretty close on all cyclinders. After all
depending on the engine, it could cause the engine to be off balance and
cause all kinds of other problems.

No, but that does not necessarily mean that the engine is bad. May be as
simple as a valve adjustment.
