Adam Lee - you are a legend mate! Used the 1.1 patch from 244. Had to
use a fresh install of Ubuntu 15.04 with the 3.19.0-28 kernel. My 14.04
installation just would not work, no matter which kernel I tried.
Machine is an Alienware-15 laptop. Last up is fixing the sound. Thanks
again, major kudos!!

This isn't a bug against Launchpad (i.e. the launchpad.net site itself).
Judging from the history of https://github.com/lxc/lxd/issues/5962, it
seems as though Stéphane's view was that it's a kernel bug, so
reassigning there.

I believe the bug should not be affecting more people as it is not
present in current kernels. Also 17.10 goes end of life in a few weeks.

/usr/lib/dkms/dkms_autoinstaller's stdout to /dev/null in
/etc/kernel/header_postinst.d/dkms. This may even be the correct fix:
it's a little noisier, but not unacceptably so and it's definitely
better than a hung installation.
