The kernel fix by updating to 5.7 from mainline does work for me. I get
the same result as @Simon, brightness change from 50-100% is working. A
proper fix would be nice because 50% brightness is in my opinion still
too bright in a dark environment.

I've found this to be easily reproducible via unigine's heaven
benchmark, which uses tessellation and other features extensively.
Simply creating a OpenGL 4.5 context will not trigger the hang, and you
must explicitly request an OGL 4+ context as the default will only be
3.0.
The default is ignored however if the game requires tessellation or
other 4+ features, which is pretty much every big game released in the
past few years...

I updated now to kernel 5.7.9 and brightness can now be reduced to less
than 50%. Only thing I noted is that setting brightness to zero does not
turn off the screen as it is when running windows on the machine.

I discovered this when running some tests on a core16 image with various rpi3
devices. Rpi3b, b+, cm3, rpi2, etc... don't have this problem, only rpi3a+.
