The linux-signed build has failed leading to me being unable to upgrade
my kernel. I do not wish to risk an upgrade that might make my laptop
unbootable. The kernel itself was built ok (and works on my non-UEFI
install machines). I am on the proposed update branch.

As a side note, anyone who tries to upgrade will get the linux-signed
package removed by APT since there is no version of the package
available that is compatible with the latest kernel.

I can also confirm solved with a BIOS update.
Make sure to find the correct BIOS for your model number at Lenovo's
driver support website. If you have a Windows partition you can install
and use their GUI BIOS updater.

I tried the latest 4.8.1 kernel in the Canonical Kernel Team PPA. That
kernel makes no progress w.r.t. this issue. Also using 'nomodeset' on
the kernel command line has no effect.

line as well as setting the gfxmode to "text". Nothing showed up on the
black screen apart from a pulsating "_".

CONFIG_HARDENED_USERCOPY_PAGESPAN is disabled in the Kernel PPA builds
of the 4.7.1 kernel. That kernel does not boot for me. So in jmy case
setting that to no will not fix it.

4.4 as there is some header issue with a function being missing in DRM.

I have patched the NVIDIA driver which now builds and installs for
4.8.0. The boot issue is not fixed even if passing nomodeset while
booting.
