If I understand correctly we should install different linux kernel versions
untill we find a kernel, that fixes bug?
I'm a bit confused what link I should use to sort out kernels. Can you suggest,
please?

I added the tag "kernel-bug-exists-upstream". To answer your questions:
(1) The problem has always existed - on Ubuntu 12.04, 14.04 and 16.04.
(2) The new kernel (4.6) doesn't appear to make any difference.

I found out that 'nouveau' driver comes with linux-image-extra package and
prevents 'nvidia' driver from being loaded. I blacklisted nouveau:
$ sudo -i
# echo "blacklist nouveau" > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-nouveau.conf
# update-initramfs -u -k all
# reboot
Finally everything works for me!

If you don't mind, you can install the fix from the link in my OP.
Obviously, that's not an ideal solution, though, as it should be fixed in the

I tried the 4.6 (yakety) kernel and didn't get the problem. Being
unwilling to stay on an unsupported combination (preferring to stay on
