I narrowed this down to working in kernel 2.6.38 (Natty) but stopped
working in 3.0 onwards.

Again my hardware is HP mini 110, not Dell. The xorg people fixed my
problem seemingly quite completely around 8 months ago (before 13.04). I
don't use dual monitors on a regular basis, so I don't know any more than

systems BIOS corrupted the memory. Could you check that you are running

F14 is the latest BIOS version available for this board.
I guess it will take two bisect runs, one to find the commit that fixed the
failing suspend in rc1 and rc2, and then use that commit to bisect rc1/2, given
that it didn't introduce this issue.

Somehow through Google I ended up reading this article [0] and followed
the instructions under "Kernel Event Sent to Udev". But no event: "If
you do not see an event with these three items, then the kernel request
is not being propagated to udev. You should file a bug at this point
against the udev
