Just an ordinary kernel update attempt via apt update && apt upgrade.
System is Ubuntu 22.04 Desktop, booting with systemd-boot instead of
GRUB.
The kernel update failed, most likely because of issues around the sd-
boot kernel-update utility.

I made the change you suggested to /etc/default/grub and did <# update-
grub>.
I also removed the Fildem menu GNOME extension, messages about which
