I am unable to do this as the GUI is completely unusable, it is like
trying to use your computer while the screen is off. I will keep this in
mind for future however, as I am trying to install a different distro -
hopefully one still Ubunutu based, but I am yet to decide.

My computer booted just fine with that file in /lib/firmware/amdgpu. I
downloaded it again after booting, just to make sure that it was the
right file version.
