I should also note that there are no events in dmesg which relate to this
event.
I *am* able to ssh into the machine. It continues to run tasks. I can
launch the taskbar menu with the meta key, press up, type

I didn't expect kscreen-doctor to work. When the screen is in this state, I
cannot swap to a virtual terminal.. so I have to ssh in to get the output.
