Under the conditions of Comment 7 I see loss of brush outline but no loss of
cursor (crosshairs). If I then move the cursor off the workspace, the brush
outline returns when I bring the cursor back to the workspace

With Windows 10 (same machine), I get the same result as with Debian 10 MATE.
With colour selection from the palette docker, I lose the brush outline but not
the cursor, which I normally have as crosshairs.

Also see it under the default Ubuntu desktop (Non wayland version)
And when I log in as a different user under the default Ubuntu desktop but with
Wayland.
