But fxaa looks very bad.
If the game would get rendered in higher resolution,then it would look much
better.
This isn't a niche use case,many games don't have ssaa support,but most pc's
can handle it for older games.

When an image or video is downscaled, it is displayed with less pixels, so some
details in the original image or video are lost. Also, scaling produces
interpolation artifacts.
