I have a very limited knowledge about imagery stuff.
I know that erwan's team has done a good job in orbisgis with a library
called ImageJ wich is a nice, small, pure java library. I see some
advantages to use such a library compared to JAI which is more heavy and
use native code.

I'm unaware of any Imagery features that we need. The OrbisGIS raster
stuff is pretty interesting though.
