In your .mc file you need to define MAILER(smtp) before MAILER(uucp). This
will generate additional mailers 'uucp-uudom' and 'uucp-dom' in your
sendmail

My primary hard-disk stops at boot time with Kernel Panic and complains

What did you do about port 20? You might want to use
Passive ftp.
