the syslog message on sent, the other end is available. I'm guessing, but
console messages don't get to syslogd do they?

I don't know if this has any validity or not but I see a lot of web
apps in things like php that don't set the "limits" large enough. They may
time out, not allow enough upload/download size, or some other artificial
limit. They work in testing with small samples, the die when scaled.
