Need to upgrade to get a new built-in function. Is Cfengine 3.1.5 the best
version to deploy? Weren't there some unresolved BDB issues in that release?
Would I be better off just going up to 3.1.4 (which still has the function I
need)? Or should I go all out and build from SVN?

I'm not sure if I've read you right, but if you mean that or => ""
works and or => {} doesn't, perhaps, it's high time to file a bug
report about that, because it must be strictly the opposite.

Yes, but not as double colon suffixed "class::" but as a promise
attribute "ifvarclass => "$(class)".
In other words, add

shell. Piping will not work in such a case. You may write a bash or perl
script instead and use it from cfengine. I am not a gentoo user, but is
there no emerge --list command?
