We do need to update the versions for our project. Ideally that should state
that the version you are seeing on the GRUB2 pages is the minimum version to
build it.

Not that I know of.
However currently the group is focusing on cleaning up the menus. The whole
idea behind the splash image is one that seemed to be of interest to the
distribution users, at least in case of the original ideas behind GRUB.

Is there any updates about progress of splashimage module? I'm one of
developers of EastLinux distro, and I really want this distro to be released
with grub2, but background in grub2 is strongly needed =((. Looks like
Savannah is down, where from can I take latest snapshot?
