That's one solution. The other would have been (although non-obvious) to set
both accounts
as "Deposit". That's allowed in the csv importer. Deposit and Withdrawal come
from the
early days of the importer and don't cover all use cases very well.
"Deposit" here really means, use the number unch
Problem solved: the withdrawal columns were all negative numbers. I changed
them to positive and it worked correctly.

Hmm I see. Thanks for the suggestion. However I don't think this solves the
issue. I would still need to go manually through all the accounts, and also
this would introduce a layer of complexity in importing my monthly
statements that I don't really want...

I had similar problems and I solved it by turning on "trading accounts" .
This way there are no exchange rates involved in individual transactions,
but instead each transaction is balanced to a currency trading account.
To correct any existing transactions I then had to click on it and accept

Ok, I figured this one out eventually as I had an unintentional oversight.
The header of the CSV file is the one which caused the issue. I had to
ensure that the header is not taken into consideration by increasing the
"Leading Lines to Skip" by 1 as my CSV file had a header.

I suppose another approach might be to concatenate the description with the
category, separated by a space, and just allow the algorithm, to learn.

I use GnuCash Android since v1.0 and it works fine with GnuCash Desktop.
I write all my transactions on Android, export to .qif, import .qif in
GnuCash Desktop and add exchange rates (I work with multiple currencies.).
That's all I need to do.
Soon GnuCash Android will export to CSV
