it was actually also documented in the metadata of the Debian package:
Suggests: libdbd-mysql, libdbd-pgsql, libdbd-sqlite3
in your case the last one. That should have been visible in Synaptic.

I'm not sure what I installed but a search for dbi dbd and I selected what
looked possible. Now it works and I am happy.

The type Spreadsheet is the same independent of whether the data file is stored
in sqlite3 or xml format on Linux. I can't test the other database formats at
this point.

To me the screenshot of your file name "AL.gnucash" with a type
of "Spreadsheet" implied that you were just using the standard default
GnuCash xml backup - is this not the case ?

Did you have a previous Debian install of gnucash - maybe try
uninstalling and re-installing the debian version - perhaps following the
uninstall instructions at
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Uninstall_Gnucash_Linux ... You could also
see if restarting solves anything.

I have been using Flatpak for GNC when I discovered that a version is in
the Debian which I installed. and removed the flatpak files. when I went
to open my data file either by double clicking the data files or Open from
GNC: No suitable backend was found for ... (See attached)
