Bruce, Did you have a previous Debian install of gnucash - maybe try uninstalling and re-installing the debian version - perhaps following the uninstall instructions at https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/Uninstall_Gnucash_Linux ... You could also see if restarting solves anything.
Why would you go back from probably the latest version available in Flatpak (4.10) to a version that's almost 18 months old (4.4) and 6 major releases ago with a lot of bug fixes and enhancements in between ? Personally I would have stuck with the Flatpak version which obviously worked. If the Flatpak sandboxing is causing an issue for you perhaps you should consider compiling it yourself ?
